Finally wrote something. It's not great, it's meant to be funny more than serious, but... well, it is what it is. I don't have any more time to work on it.
On one side of the desolate wasteland was a shimmering blue portal – the only way out of the demon realms. Every few moments it seemed to shrink a little more, as the wizards on the other side struggled with the powerful magic required to hold such a pathway open. There was no time to waste – it would be closed in minutes. On the other side of the wasteland was a vast army of demons; the small ones with scales and wings, the ones that stood over 7 foot high with tiny heads and massive clawed hands, the ones that were so deformed and twisted that it was terrifying to look upon them. Usually the different species fought amongst themselves, but for once they had banded together against the invaders of their world.
Kane, Riandur, Phellan and Cory stood in the very middle. All were blood-splattered and weary. Entering into the realm of such evil, filled with such powerful creatures, had been one of the most dangerous missions they had ever faced – and half of their group had been lost along the way. Their half-demon companion had been forced to stay behind and battle his own father to keep his friends safe. Randal, former guildmaster of a powerful assassin's guild and leader of this particular expedition, had slipped the maps into Kane's hand and silently stalked away to die by his demon lover's side. Cassander and Dilon – experienced mages and brother and sister – they had fallen too.
Now there were just four. Kane Theaza, the blademaster of legend, haunted by memories of lost friends and family. His dark eyes were blank, and several days worth of stubble dotted his cheeks. Riandur the wolfman, his body and soul scarred by horrors none should have rightly survived. Phellan, his smaller double, now grown and yet somehow still innocent despite everything he had witnessed. Cory the half-elven assassin, thin and pale and way out of his depth, but somehow still clinging on to his courage.
“We need to get to that portal,” Riandur said wearily, “we don't have much time left.”
Kane swallowed before he spoke. His voice was so soft, it could barely be heard. “We'll never make it. Those demons can move too fast.”
“We will just have to take a chance,” Cory pulled lightly at Kane's arm. “Maybe if we run fast enough...”
“We won't make it.” Briefly Kane took his eyes away from the approaching hoard, to look at the young assassin who had been like a brother to him. “Go. I'll hold them off while you three get away.”
“Kane, no!”
“You'll be slaughtered!”
“Go!” The warrior insisted. “There's no sense in all of us dying down here. Go, now!”
Reluctantly they left him and began the run to the portal, Phellan taking care to keep pace with Cory, while Riandur stayed slightly behind. But they had not gone too far when Riandur spoke again: “Phellan.”
They turned to face him, noticing that he had stopped some distance back. “Riandur?” Phellan's voice trembled slightly as he looked at his mentor. “Is something wrong?”
“Kane cannot hold them off on his own. I am going back.”
“No... Riandur, you can't. You'll die! You can't die, you can't!”
“Phellan,” Riandur spoke kindly but firmly, “you have a job to do now, haven't you?”
Brushing the tears aside, Phellan nodded, “I have to protect Cory.”
“So that is what you need to do, pup. We'll be right behind you.”
“Promise?”
“I promise. Be brave, Phellan. I am very proud of you.”
Phellan threw himself at his mentor and hugged him tightly. Riandur returned the hug for a moment, his face unreadable, before saying seriously: “Now I want you to run as fast as you both can. Keep your eyes on that portal and do not look back. Understand?” They both nodded. “Then go!”
-------
The demons were upon him, but Kane neither showed or felt any fear. With a hiss, he drew his two long swords from their scabbards and waited. The first one launched itself forwards and he gutted it easily, slicing open its stomach with one fluid motion. As he turned to the side, dodging an attack and decapitating a second, his thoughts briefly turned to the little sister he had lost when they had both been children. Lucie... I shall soon be with you again.
He was not surprised to see Riandur suddenly materialise by his side, attacking another demon with no small amount of force. “Phellan and Cory?”
“They got through safely. Now it's time for a bit of demon-slaying, I figure.”
Kane grinned at him wryly. “It figures that my last moments would be spent with you.”
“Of course. Did you think I would let you have all the fun?”
Without another word, they threw themselves into the fray.
--------
Back in their own world, Cory and Phellan stood watching – still and silent – as the portal closed completely. The four wizards dropped from exhaustion. Both had tears in their eyes.
“They've gone, haven't they?” Phellan whispered. Cory could only nod, and then fell to his knees in grief. Everything he had known had gone... there was nothing left.
Phellan held his friend. Cory's tears wetted his fur. His own tears fell upon the assassin's messy blond hair. The young wolfman threw back his head and howled.

The palace that sat at the centre of the demon realm was huge and dark and gloomy. The outside was surrounded by pikes with demon heads stuck upon them. Inside, a hallway filled with bones led up the the great hall. The hall itself was filled with small pools of magical red lava, which bubbled away happily and provided head as well as light. All the walls were covered with graphic and colourful drawings depicting various forms of torture. A large dining table held the remains of a feast. At the end stood two large thrones of black marble.
Sprawled across one of these thrones, Kane Theaza casually whistled a tune to himself. His swords lay beside him, and in one hand he held the skull of a demon which was filled with wine, and from which he occasionally drank. His eyes once again sparkled with life.
Sitting on the floor beside his throne was a small girl, about six or so. She had long blond hair and blue eyes, and she smiled a lot. She was playing a game that involved trying to knock over empty bottles by rolling skulls and other little bones at them – but frequently she would turn to Kane to make sure that he was still there. After twenty years, brother and sister had at last been reunited.
On the other side of the hall, Riandur had secured a few of the remaining demons in chains and was using them to practise his fighting skills on. They snarled and tried to lash out, while he spun around and dodged them. A pile of weapons sat in easy reach; flails, maces, staves.
“Isn't this the life, Theaza?” he called over. “Who would have thought that taking control of a demon realm would be so easy?”
Kane just threw back his head and laughed.
