I admire your commitment to Cory. A lot of people don't have the kind of dedication to be with a complicated dog for life. I think we have the opposite German Shepherd to your Cory. Sophie will bark at the front door or will bark at dogs when she is in her yard, but she is shy and doesn't like criticism. There are certain words, like "bad" or "ears" (she's had problems with ear infections in the last few years) or "brush" that make her hide. She likes people, and surprisingly she likes children; when we have people over she likes to say hello to everyone and then picks out the person who is most likely to feed her and sits next to them.
Have you read any about the yellow ribbon on the leash thing? It helps to indicate that your dog isn't interested in socializing. I am totally with you about people who let their dogs to run loose. It makes me really angry, too.
