“I won't be a rock star. I will be a legend.”
― Freddie Mercury
So I have recently exchanged a message or two with
fred_fierce – who is a man with many secrets. Not secrets I shall be revealing here, however. Sorry to disappoint anyone who was hoping for a few juicy details.
There were two things that struck me the most about him. The first was that he happens to share a name with my long time idol, Freddie Mercury (yes, I bet that came as a complete surprise!), and the second was that I can kind of see some of Freddie's attitude in him. An example, in his own words: Oh honey. You can't even handle my bio right now. Take it easy. I can easily close my eyes and hear Freddie say that with his adorable dreamy voice... sorry, just having a bit of a moment there.
Love him or hate him, I think almost everyone has at least heard of Freddie Mercury. Born on 5th September 1946, he was the front man of the British rock band Queen. Musician, singer and song writer, he was known for his powerful stage presence, and strong vocals over a four-octave range.
Some of the following words describe him perfectly:
Powerful
Incredible
A legend
Sensational
A genius
Eccentric
Flamboyant
“Modern paintings are like women, you'll never enjoy them if you try to understand them.”
― Freddie Mercury
Unfortunately he died young, and I never got a chance to see him perform live. I would have loved to meet him, because while he was far from perfect, the glimpses from interviews and the statements from people who know him make me think that he would have been an awesome person to know. I was surprised to read that he was actually very shy, much like many of us. And in a way, I see that as inspiration: if he can get up there and perform in front of the millions of people that came to watch their concerts, I can write this intro!
One of my favourite quotes from him is the following. It seems we share a similar sense of humour:
“Oh, I was not made for heaven. No, I don't want to go to heaven. Hell is much better. Think of all the interesting people you're going to meet down there!”
― Freddie Mercury
In a way, no matter how famous we are or what we achieve, deep down we aren't all that different. That's true of myself,
fred_fierce, Freddie Mercury, and everyone reading this. We are not that different, we all have our dreams and the ability to try and make them come true.
In the words of my hero: The show must go on!

Date: 2013-05-10 01:59 pm (UTC)I also cry when watching Highlander - can't listen to Who Wants To Live Forever without a big box of tissues...

Date: 2013-05-10 02:01 pm (UTC)I saw a clip of it in colour and I almost broke down and wept at how sick poor Freddy looked.
I just want to remember him in his joyful tarty birthday party outfits.... I don't want to see him look so sick and awful >.>

Date: 2013-05-10 02:04 pm (UTC)I want to remember his flamboyance, his zest for life and the fact that he was a massive, wonderful, unashamed tart :)

But then I mix and match costumes. I regularly dress as Zorro the Witch Pirate >.>
-cough-
Think Freddie would approve?

Date: 2013-05-10 02:14 pm (UTC)Says something about my next creation.... Freddy Krueger/Nightmare Clown...... which came about because of a silly glove cat toy... >.>
Meh. Mainstream characters are too mainstream for me.
I wonder if Freddie would appreciate me at work... my usual attire of jeans and t-shirt, plus knitted Cookie Monster hat and waiter's apron.... just for shits and giggles. Lucky the boss thinks its attracts customers xD

Date: 2013-05-10 02:30 pm (UTC)Upstairs manager might think it completely kicks arse. But she's a stoner hippie, so she thinks everything completely kicks arse.

Date: 2013-05-10 02:45 pm (UTC)Aside from the outfit, we used a flour and water paste to give me a pallour and crumbling zombie "skin", I used shoe polish to make myself look as though I'd just crawled out of the grave, gave myself Alice Cooper eyes and a diagonal slash of scarlet lipstick across my mouth. My teeth are optional, so I left Jaws in her tank :)
There is nothing more satisfying than answering the door and having a young lad say "Trick or - EEEK"!
i like the sound of your upstairs manager; I'm a tree-hugging Wiccan who thinks weird is the new normal :D
PS: Friended you :)

Date: 2013-05-11 09:33 am (UTC)But your costume sounds completely awesome xD
People ask if I was named for Alice Cooper (my full name is Allison xD) drives me crazy xDD
Deb (upstair manager lol) is just.... weird. She has the most eclectic dress sense ever and makes it work >.>
